We all know Fermat’s last theorem so I will not quote it here. Famously he wrote next to his declaration of the theorem “I have found a wondrous proof of this theorem, but this margin is too small to contain it”. This provoked 300 years of the best minds in Mathematics searching for his proof. We can be sure it was not the proof that Andrew Wiles eventually constructed, corrected and published in 1995. Most mathematicians believe Fermat’s solution probably had a flaw.
On wall in Cambridge, at some point in the 1970s, there appeared the following graffiti. “God Exists – I have found a wondrous proof of this truth, but this wall is too small to contain it”. Obviously written by someone with a grasp of mathematical history.
